BURNThe Great Baltimore Burn
why 'the burn'?
The Great Baltimore Burn is named after the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904. The blaze spanned 70 city blocks and burned for over 30 hours, requiring the help of more than 1,200 firefighters before the flames were brought under control.
Historically, our event takes place the first Saturday in February. This year, the first Saturday of February falls on the 7th -- the 105th anniversary of the Great Baltimore Fire.
The name is also a play on the deep pain you feel in your legs during and after the 2000m sprint ... but you already knew that part.

Sheraton, Baltimore City Center

The 2009 edition of the Great Baltimore Burn took place on February 7, 2009 at the Sheraton Baltimore City Center hotel, located at 101 West Fayette Street. In addition to the usual 2000 meter races, we raised money for two local charities: Children's Burn Unit at Johns Hopkins and the Baltimore City Fire Fighters Widows and Orphans of Maryland.

As part of our these fundraising efforts, we held three special events. First came two series of 250 meter sprint challenges: one pitted civilians against area firefighters, and second clump of sprints had celebrities planting themselves on ergs. We also converted our 30 minute row event into an "erg-a-thon" to benefit the two charities. We should like to thank everyone for participating in either of these events and raising money for these very worthy charities.

Sincerely,
Mike Chin & Kathy Nickel
Directors, The Great Baltimore Burn
