BALTIMORE ROWING.

Rowing Programs : Sweep

In sweep rowing, each rower uses only one oar. Coxswains steer the shell and is the on-the-water coach for the crew. Pairs (for two people), fours (for four people) and the eight are sweep boats. Pairs and fours may or may not have a coxswain. Eights always have a coxswain.

The Baltimore Rowing Club has two coached sweep programs to meet your fitness and competitive needs.

Duration and Details
Open Sweep
The Open Rowing program is coached by USRA-certified coaches, and meets three days each week. This sweep rowing program is suitable for rowers with experience beyond an introductory rowing course, such as the 7-week novice program. The main focus of this program is to improve fitness and develop more advanced rowing technique in a recreational setting. New for 2010, at the coaches descretion introduction to sculling sessions will be offered. This is primarily for those individuals that have no or limited sculling experience. If this is something that you are interested in please advise the coaches. Those interested in training for regattas should notify the coaches of their intent early in the season to facilitate boatings and training towards their goals.

Open sweep classes meet Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, and Saturday mornings from 8:00am until 10:30am.
Competitive Sweep
The competitive program trains year-round, and attends local, national, and international races. This group trains five days a week with an Elite-level coach. Off-water condtioning workouts prescribed by the coach are required to increase conditioning. This group trains both sweep rowers and scullers.

Rowers in the morning competitive group meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 5:15am until 7:00am, and Saturday mornings from 5:45am until 7:45am.
Schedule
The Competitive and Open group hits the water in early April.
