In sculling, each rower uses two oars. Singles, doubles, and quads are sculling boats for one, two, and four rowers, respectively. No coxswains are used to steer sculling boats. Instead, rowers are able to steer themselves by altering the pressure used between their oars.
The Baltimore Rowing Club has two coached sculling programs to meet your fitness and competitive needs: open sculling, and competitive sculling.
- Open Sculling
- This sculling program is suitable for rowers with at least one year of sweep rowing experience. The main focus of this program is to improve fitness and develop more advanced rowing technique in a recreational setting. Safety is of utmost importance in our sculling classes, and rowers may not go out unaccompanied without first passing a series of certification tests. You have the option to sign up as an annual member and scull, or join for a particular season and scull.
Open sculling classes meet Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, and Saturday mornings from 8:00am until 10:30am.
- Competitive Sculling
- The competitive program trains year-round, and attends local, national, and international races. This group trains five days a week with an Elite-level coach. Off-water conditioning workouts prescribed by the coach are required to increase conditioning. This group trains both sweep rowers and scullers. You have the option to sign up as an annual member and scull, or join for a particular season and scull.
Rowers in the morning competitive group meet Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 5:15am until 7:00am, and Saturday mornings from 5:45am until 7:45am.
Open programs are coached. If you have your own boat, you have the option to sign up with or without coaching. Please go to the Rack Owners Program description and sign up if you have your own boat.
If you sign up annually or seasonally, you can also attend the sweep programs for at no additional cost.

"The Pack"
An additional sculling program has been added to compliment the existing Open and Competitive groups. Dubbed "BRC Pack" -- think Rat Pack, but with oars, and without Humphrey Bogart -- this program is for those members with sculling experience who are looking for a flexible program to fit their needs, schedules, and racing goals. This program is uncoached; members are expected to give and take knowledge from other program members. The BRC Pack has its own page; check it out for more information.
The Small Print:
When paying registration dues by check, a $25 service charge applies to any checks returned unpaid.
