Rowing got its start in Baltimore in 1864 when the Ariel Club was founded. First named the Baltimore Rowing Club before changing its name, the Ariel was soon followed by the Undine and Zephyr. As a group, the local clubs called themselves the Patapsco Navy, just as the rowing organizations in Philadelphia dubbed themselves the Schuylkill Navy. The names of some clubs changed but annual championships of the Patapsco Navy became a staple of local rowing at least through the 1870s.

Baltimore Rowing Club promotes the sport of rowing at all levels and for all ages. BRC is committed to be a good community neighbor in the Cherry Hill area in southwest Baltimore, and leader by providing safe and sustainable programs for our diverse growing membership. BRC will strive to be a national leader in the sport of rowing and encourage and promote our competitive pursuits. Established in 1979, the BRC is a non-profit organization established in 1979 and located in the Cherry Hill area just south of Federal Hill and the Inner Harbor.

Baltimore clubs hosted several Mid-Atlantic and national championships through the 1920s that attracted crowds of up to 10,000 people and were covered by The Sun and other local newspapers as major sporting events just as big as Orioles or Ravens games are today.

Eventually, World War II took away the rowers and waterfront industrialization took the boathouses, but not before Baltimore crews established themselves as major powers on the East Coast circuit and won numerous national championships and a few international titles as well.

Rowing in Baltimore was re-established in 1979, when a group of former college oarsmen and other enthusiasts of the sport decided to revive what once had been a extremely popular pastime on the Patapsco River. Today the Patapsco Navy has re-emerged with three colleges, one major club and a handful of high school crews training here for regional, national and, occasionally, international races. Since celebrating our Silver Anniversary in 2004, the Baltimore Rowing Club has enjoyed tremendous growth by training new rowers and attracting talented rowers who have relocated to the Baltimore area.
